Corston Architectural Detail - The perfect finishing touches to my kitchen re vamp
Last year, as you may know if you follow my Instagram account @Theresa_Gromski I undertook a revamp of my galley style kitchen in my Edwardian home.
We couldn’t completely change the kitchen (our planned side return extension to make the narrow space wider is a few years off) but we wanted to give it a look that suited our style more. The kitchen I inherited when I bought the house as a single mum 10 years ago was operfectly serviceable but somewhat bland. It needed character adding and decorating in a way that fitted in with how we’ve decorated the rest of the house over the last decade.
As you can see from the image above it was a basic Ikea kitchen with nondescript (and sharp!) soulless handles. It needed character adding, more texture and details that nodded toward the period property rather than these modern units and drawer pulls.
The finishing touches in a room; the handles, the switches, the sockets. All the small details you may not think are as important as the big things, but they can really elevate even the most basic of spaces to something special and unique.
Plus if you choose the same finish for all your hardware they can tie disparate elements in your room all together and create a more cohesive design.
I wanted a vintage, rustic, bohemian style kitchen but a space that still had a contemporary edge. Mainly I just wanted the kitchen to feel more ‘me’ more homely, characterful and slightly quirky.
The eco credentials of a company were also important to me. Corston Architectural Detail employ skilled craftspeople worldwide and hand finish every piece in their workshop in Wiltshire here in the UK. Most of their products are made in brass - a fully sustainable material that can be repeatedly re cycled and will age beautifully over time. Plus all their packaging is fully recyclable and single use plastic free.
To complement my rustic style black stained and natural birch ply cabinet doors I chose Kilburn handles in a Bronze finish, I also went for matching sockets, switches, shelf brackets and Elm cup handles (also in Bronze finish) for my vintage drawers to tie the whole kitchen together.
I considered the finish I went for at length, the Antique brass finish by Corston is beautiful and more classic, but I decided to go for the Bronze finish which feels more contemporary to me (and you know how I love black!)
Once all the finishing touches were added I couldn’t be happier with the end result. The quality is second to none, all of the pieces are pleasingly weighty and a pleasure to look at and handle in my kitchen every time I open a draw or switch on a light.
